Winter Workshops

Download flyer

These Playback Workshops are designed as both an introduction and a refresher course, covering the Playback form of improvised theatre with a broad emphasis on ensemble performance, improvisation skills, and the creation of spontaneous theatrical moments and stories drawn directly from personal experiences.

Held in a fun, safe, friendly learning environment, these workshops will explore some of the new approaches to the work directly from the New Zealand Summer School.  The classes are suitable for:

  • Anyone wanting to fine-tune their improvisation skills, give their general drama practice a boost.
  • If you’ve attended a prior Playback Workshop you will learn different ways into the work and training.
  • And all those who would like to learn, maybe never having done the work before.

Playback Summer School in New Zealand

Nikki Rydon

Nikki Rydon - Reflections

For me this summer saw the ocean, ice cream splattered down-time and a ten day residency with the Playback Theatre Summer School, held in Paekakariki, North Island, New Zealand.

The programme was led by Bev Hosking and Christian Penny, and explored Playback's role in the community to serve as a platform for communication, focusing specifically in the realm of social and political dialogue. With a strong multicultural presence in the group , there was much conversation surrounding indigenous equality and the merging of cultures. This provided rich material to work with, stimulating many insightful and challenging moments.

I'm curious about the assimilation of this work both within my working life as an actor, as well as my personal life - an enriching way to start the new year!

Drama Teens A Great Success

Melbourne Playback Theatre Company, in association with JCAAA (Joint Council Access for All Abilities), ran a week-long holiday drama program for teenagers with mild intellectual and physical disabilities in January. This special holiday workshop was a new initiative, following the after-school program that the company has facilitated at Gasworks for the past three years.

Participants had a great time engaging in a range of drama games and activities designed to get them up and moving, singing, performing and using their imagination. Over the course of the week they created an "underwater world", explored language with their very own hand puppets, played out a range of stories and much much more.

Feedback from the participants and their carers has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to Glynis, Mike, Dan, Petra, Karen & Nancy for facilitating a wonderful program.
